Virtual worlds have been a reality in video games for years now, with titles like Secondlife and Entropia Universe bending the rules of reality. In the next few years, we will get a serious gaming revolution with VR and AR technology that will change everything we know about gaming. So, what exactly is a metaverse? Well, even though it’s just a concept at this point, it’s going to be the future of virtual reality gaming.

What is metaverse?

The term “metaverse” has been around for a while, but it’s the past year where we’ve seen it get some mainstream traction. The definition of metaverse has changed over time. It was first coined by Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel Snow Crash as a virtual reality space where avatars would interact with one another and conduct commerce.

Fast forward to today, and the gaming industry is attempting to create its own version of the metaverse, one that is built on top of games and player-driven experiences. In some ways, this is the future of social media, where people are no longer passive consumers of content or even active creators, but instead are active participants in their own entertainment experiences.

Games are now part of a much larger ecosystem that includes not just video games, but also mobile games and apps like Niantic’s Pokémon Go as well as esports. More importantly, these different types of experiences all feed into each other. For example, Pokémon Go players can watch esports events to see how others play the game or watch Twitch streamers to see how they play the game or even see what others are doing in the game by watching YouTube videos. This creates a loop that ties together different types of games and different types of players into a single ecosystem

The gaming metaverse is a virtual world that enables people to experience the gaming world with each other. Gamers can become part of their creations and find non-player characters who are like them. They can choose avatars that either represents their true selves or allow them to assume a role they have always wanted. The time has come for gaming to move into a new frontier and develop the gaming metaverse. With it will come many advantages for both gamers and game designers.
